Mindset and Health
Well February is already upon us and for most of us that means back to school or work and summer holidays rapidly winding down. It also means that many are us are going into a new situation, somewhere we haven’t been before either professionally or otherwise. So it is a crucial time of year to back yourself and trust in your own god given ability. Making the right decisions and focussing on the big picture is critical to starting your year off strong. This brings me to what I believe is a much maligned topic: Headspace.
The idea of thinking positive is probably the biggest concept in health care that personally I struggled with. It took me a good few years to finally see how it linked into the bigger picture of our health overall. Once I saw the light, I was able to grow and accomplish so much more than I had ever previously achieved. It became apparent that my mindset or thoughts greatly influenced how well my body worked, from; how well I could focus on things, holding my adjustments better, relaxing and benefiting from a massage, having less digestive issues and sleeping & recovering better.
Your own personal Self-image definitely forms a key spoke in your wheel of health. How do you think about you? Are you happy with your health, exercise and diet? Does work and home satisfy and fulfil your wants and needs? More importantly, do you trust in yourself or are you always second guessing? Do you like or are you sticking to your “one word” for the year and are you doing your best to create your own happy place?
The more positive you are in your own self-image and beliefs, the more trust you place in yourself. This limits the seeds of self-doubt. Your mind is the most fertile field around and the greatest thing is you chose what you want to plant in this field, seeds of failure or seeds of success. As George Bernard Shaw said, “those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
On a technical side of things you have probably heard me say for years that stress or tension on your body is not just physical. It can also be emotional or chemical. What I know now about stress and positive thoughts is that this is absolutely true. Positive thoughts limit stress, they decrease cortisol secretion while at the same time increases the release of dopamine and serotonin. Meaning it is decreasing the major stress hormone while increasing the major relaxing & recovering hormones allowing you to get more out of your day without the perceived toll on your body. So trust in the plan and most importantly trust in yourself and as Dr Seuss said, “you have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose!”
